Everything you need to know about creating maps with NeedAMap.
NeedAMap is a map creation tool for tabletop RPG game masters. Describe any scene — a dungeon, a tavern, a spaceship, a haunted manor — and get a high-resolution, VTT-ready map in under a minute. It works for any genre: fantasy, sci-fi, horror, western, cyberpunk, and more.
Sign up for free, type a description of the scene you want, choose your resolution, and hit Create. Your map will be ready in 30 to 60 seconds. No drawing skills, no software to install.
Any genre you can describe. Fantasy dungeons, sci-fi space stations, cyberpunk alleys, horror mansions, western saloons, steampunk workshops, modern city streets, post-apocalyptic wastelands — if you can put it into words, NeedAMap can create it.
Most maps generate in 30 to 60 seconds. 1K resolution is the fastest, 4K takes a bit longer. You’ll see a progress indicator while your map is being created.
Not at all. NeedAMap creates maps from plain language descriptions. If you can describe a scene to your players, you can make a map.
Yes — you get 5 free maps at 1K resolution when you sign up. No credit card required. If you want more maps or higher resolution, plans start at $5.
Each map costs credits based on resolution: 1K costs 1 credit, 2K costs 2, and 4K costs 4. You get 5 free credits to start. The $5/month subscription gives you 20 credits per month, and $5 credit packs give you 15 credits that never expire.
The subscription gives you 20 credits each month that refresh on your billing date, and unlocks 2K and 4K resolution. Credit packs are one-time purchases of 15 credits that never expire — available on any tier. Packs work at your current resolution and keep working even if you cancel your subscription.
Unused subscription credits roll over for up to three months while your subscription is active. If you cancel, any rolled-over credits expire at the end of your final billing period. Credit pack credits are separate and never expire.
Yes. Cancel from your settings page. You keep your credits until the end of your billing period.
All major credit and debit cards through Stripe. Apple Pay and Google Pay are also supported.
Any VTT that accepts image imports: Roll20, Foundry VTT, Owlbear Rodeo, Fantasy Grounds, Shmeppy, Talespire, and more. Download the map image and drag it in.
Download your map from NeedAMap, then in Roll20 go to your game page, click the map layer, and drag the image file onto the canvas. Adjust the size to fit your grid.
Download your map, then in Foundry create a new Scene and set the background image to your downloaded file. Foundry will auto-detect dimensions and you can configure grid size.
For most VTT sessions, 2K gives the best balance of quality and file size. Use 1K for quick one-shots or testing prompts, and 4K for maximum detail or if you plan to print.
Not currently — maps are generated as clean images without grid lines. Most VTTs (Roll20, Foundry, Owlbear Rodeo) have built-in grid tools that overlay on imported images, giving you full control over grid size and style.
Yes. Maps you generate on any paid plan are yours to use however you like — in your campaigns, on DMs Guild, Patreon, your YouTube channel, or published adventures. No attribution required.
You own full usage rights to any map generated on a paid plan. Free-tier maps are for personal use.
NeedAMap uses a custom-tuned image generation pipeline optimised for top-down tactical maps. We’re always testing and upgrading the underlying models to improve quality.
General AI image tools generate scenes — not maps. NeedAMap is purpose-built for top-down tactical maps at VTT-ready resolutions with prompt engineering specifically tuned for tabletop RPG scenes. You don’t need to learn complex prompting or post-process the output.
